A 60-year-old man from the US is accused of committing insurance fraud by getting someone to cut his legs off and blaming it on a tractor accident.
Unfortunately for the legless fraudster, his story didn’t add up, and further investigation by the Howell County Sheriff’s Office unveiled his idiotic scam.
Police and medical workers dispatched to the man’s farm were initially suspect after they found the man with his stumps neatly bandaged, and the legs nowhere to be found. Police also noted the clean cuts where his legs were severed, which is definitely not consistent with similar injuries inflicted by farming equipment (in this case something called a brush hog).
“If it was done by a brush hog, it would have been a bloody, gory mess. I have seen those types of accidents before. This was not like that,” Torey Thompson, a lieutenant with the Howell County Sheriff’s Office, told the Springfield News Reader.
Adding to their suspicions was the fact that the man was a recognised paraplegic, raising the question as to how he got into the tractor’s way in the first place. Further investigations revealed that “an individual from Florida had come to the man with an axe and allegedly hacked off his legs for a price”.
“It was a poorly executed plan. I have not seen anything quite like it,” Thompson was quoted as saying. Besides losing his legs, the man now faces charges of insurance fraud.
It’s been a bad week in general for insurance scammers after an Irish woman’s £650,000 insurance claim for car crash injuries was thrown out following social media pictures of her ‘throwing a Christmas tree’ surfaced.
Kamila Grabska, 36, said that her severe back and neck injuries from a car crash in 2017 prevented her from working and playing with her children. But a judge ruled that Kamila Grabska’s claims of ‘debilitating injury’ were ‘completely at odds’ with the evidence and that her injuries likely resulted from throwing a tree instead of a wreck.
The court also saw a video of Grabska training her dog in a park for more than an hour in addition to the Christmas tree contest pictures.
On the upside, Grabska did win the Irish International Christmas Tree Throwing Championship.
