A $10,000 tip at a Michigan restaurant suddenly went south when the waitress was let go after sharing her win with her co-workers.
It was reported that earlier this month, a highly generous person left a huge tip on a $32 bill after dining at The Mason Jar Cafe in Benton Harbor, Michigan.
Workers at a Michigan restaurant were left in complete shock, with the manager of The Mason Jar Cafe going up to the customer to double-check that he was really willing to spill an extra R192,000.
After the back and forths, they accepted the windfall in pure disbelief.
What makes this story even more moving is the reason behind the life-changing tip. The mystery tipper stopped by The Mason Jar Cafe while in town for a friend’s funeral, and it turns out that the tip was his way of paying tribute to his friend’s memory.
Although the tip was given to the man’s server, she opted to share the money with the other eight people on staff at the time.
“It was just really an act of kindness that impacted so many people,” said server Paige Mulick.
Despite this, the inspiring story of generosity has taken a turn, and that server, Linsey Boyd, has been fired. The ex-employee said in a now-deleted Facebook post that “drama ensued” after the $10,000 tip was shared, “and in an attempt to diffuse the situation and resolve any rumours, things became even worse”.
Linsey told WNDU 16 News Now that the place became toxic, with co-workers unhappy with the distribution of the big tip. Linsey went to management, but they didn’t seem to support her.
“I at least made them aware of things that were being said, and I also wanted those rumors and any animosity to be dealt with.” She says.
Linsey says they dealt with the animosity by firing her the following week, and she’ll never forget what her boss said to her.
“It was still getting a lot of publicity and attention, and the best way to calm the situation and to move forward was for me to not come back,” she says.
“I was praised so much on TV for being willing to share the tip, which is what the man asked — it’s all I did,” she says. “But it hurt, you know, saying that I’m such a wonderful employee, and then the next week (getting fired).”
When she posted her side of the story on social media, she said her former employer began to threaten her. She’s reportedly hired a lawyer and is still reeling after swinging from model employee to fired server in the span of a week.
In a since-deleted Facebook post, the cafe owners said that the decision to terminate the server’s employment was unrelated to the $10,000 tip.
Eish. It is a real pity how destructive money can be sometimes.
