There have been media reports about the breakdown of Nádine (pictured above) and Derick Hougaard’s relationship, with Louis Liebenberg prompted to explain why the ex-Springbok rugby player is living in his home.
The former rugby player made headlines last year when he had to be rushed to hospital after being found unconscious at his home by his ex-girlfriend, Afrikaans pop singer, Nadiné. He was placed in a medically induced coma for 13 days and had made it out alive even after the doctors had given him a 50/50 chance of survival.
In October last year, NB Publishers released a book called Derick Hougaard: Die ware storie van die Liefling van Loftus, which revealed untold stories of Derick’s days on and off the pitch and how his confidants and friends tried curbing his addiction to prescription pills.
We revealed some shocking snippets from the book at the time.
Liebenberg says Hougaard was recently in a rehabilitation centre in Stellenbosch for three months where he received help at his own expense and then went to his parents. From there he flew back to Gauteng and apparently immediately went to a pharmacy where he got pills again.
According to Liebenberg, the former sportsman is staying with him in order to get his life back. Liebenberg said they are working to help save Hougaard’s life and he has been taken to his home in Bronkhorstbaai where he is being looked after physically, even though Hougaard’s doctors are also at a loss for him.
Hougaard has reportedly been living with Liebenberg and his wife at their home in Bronkhorstbaai for two weeks now, and according to the diamond dealer he has had to employ a bodyguard to protect the former rugby star from himself.
In a video, Louis Liebenberg responded to media reports about Nádine apparently leaving Hougaard, clarifying the moving situation too.
Nuusflits reported that Liebenberg invited Nádine and News24 to his home for various reasons that he mentions in the video. At one point in the video, Hougaard can be seen sitting on a sofa and sipping on a cigarette. When asked if he wanted to say anything, he remained silent.
Then, The Citizen reported that the former Springbok rugby player pleaded for someone to fetch him from Liebenberg’s home. According to the original publication, Hougaard told them in a WhatsApp message that being there was bad for him and that he just wanted to be himself again.
Commenting on Derick’s pleas for help, Liebenberg said that he [Derick] is not tied down, he is not strapped, he can walk where he wants. He added that Hougaard doesn’t have anything left and has to start over from scratch, and that he is giving him the opportunity to do that.
Liebenberg also said that we will be ‘picking up a dead Hougaard’ if he is not watched. According to Liebenberg, Derick is constantly looking for ways to feed his pill addiction.
One of Hougaards’ old friends, Renier Wissing, is said to have flown to Johannesburg from Cape Town on Sunday morning to see Derick.
It seems Derick needs all the friends he can get right now.
