A buffed Bill Skarsgård stars as a post-apocalyptic ass-kicking martial arts fighter in one of the Toronto Film Festival’s “hidden gems”, Boy Kills World.
Directed by Moritz Mohr, the film is described as blurring the boundaries between absurdity and adrenaline-pumping action. It sounds like a good date movie, even if just for a super-ripped Skarsgård.
The dystopian thriller, written by Tyler Burton Smith and Arend Remmers, follows Skarsgård – via internal dialogue – through the everyday gory life of a kid training to take part in the Culling, a yearly tradition that kills off random members of the population.
The ‘internal dialogue’ provides watchers with an explanation for the story, but also allows our hero to communicate with others who seem to understand him even though he can’t hear or speak. Weird, but let’s go with it.
Adding some female energy to the crazy story is Famke Jansen, who plays Hilda, the villain who started the whole Culling trend.
The plot pretty much involves the Boy (Skarsgård) witnessing Hilda’s minions accidentally kill some of his hometown’s people, including his family. The senseless killing then inspires him to seek revenge and he leaves homes behind to link up with the resistance against the Culling. Together they vow to take down the whole establishment even if it costs them their lives, and bloody fight scenes ensue.
It’s Karate Kid meets The Purge, with a spattering of KungFu Panda-like absurdity. According to Deadline, “Skarsgård brings a certain charm to his role with his signature smirk, even if Boy Kills World jumps back and forth between exciting and confusing.”
Also starring in this “vivid spectacle that revels in its genre-blending chaos” is South African Sharlto Copley, along with Yayan Ruhian, Andrew Koji, Brett Gelman, Jessica Rothe, and Isaiah Mustafa. Archer voice actor and jazz musician H. Jon Benjamin features as the voice of hunky Bill’s ‘inner monologue’.
Boy Kills World will premiere on April 26th.
