Emilia Clarke, better known as Daenerys Targaryen in the fantasy series Game of Thrones, and her mother have received their MBEs from Prince William at Windsor Castle.
Mom and daughter were named in the New Year Honours list for services to people with brain injuries. Emilia suffered two brain haemorrhages in her 20s, then set up the SameYou charity in 2019 with mum Jenny.
After the ceremony, the actress said that the prize had given her “such a boost of energy and momentum”.
Emilia suffered her first haemorrhage in 2011, shortly after finishing filming Season 1 of Game of Thrones. The second arrived two years later.
She told BBC News that it was “a miracle” she remained alive to discuss the story, and that she had “no major repercussions” other than exhaustion.
Emilia also mentioned how there was insufficient care and rehabilitation for brain damage victims when they left the hospital. Jenny is the CEO of SameYou, which advocates to alter this as well as improve mental health recovery treatment.

Receiving an MBE, or Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, is the third highest ranking Order of the British Empire level (excluding a knighthood/damehood), behind CBE and then OBE. So this doesn’t mean Emilia will now be known as Dame Emilia.
She does however share the title with fellow Members of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire like Ed Shereen, Adele, and footballer Steven Gerrard.
