Update: The SPCA released a statement on the livestock ship that’s been stinking up the city, and it looks as bad as it smells.

Officials from the Good Hope SPCA boarded the foul-smelling vessel this morning and found conditions to be ‘unbearable’ with a build-up of ammonia and faeces thick in the air.

The ship is in the process of loading feed and is carrying 19,000 cattle bound for Iraq from Brazil. They’ve all already spent 2½ weeks on board.

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA made an application and was granted a court order to enter the vessel to ensure the welfare of the animals on board but had to enlist the assistance of Sea Border SAPS after initially being denied access.

The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) has reiterated its firm stance against the live export of animals by sea, saying “We have been in and out of the High Court on numerous occasions since 2019.  The NSPCA and the Cape of Good Hope SPCA are actively engaged on the Al Kuwait, a live export vessel currently docked at Cape Town Harbour.”

The animal welfare organisation expressed their extreme gratitude for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, who has pulled out all the stops to assist the NSPCA in their inspection.

They further urge the public to consider the plight of these sentient beings, confined to cramped quarters with limited ventilation and hygiene, as they continue their efforts to ensure their well-being.
