Best known for her roles in Game of Thrones and The Spanish Princess, British actress Charlotte Hope has received rave reviews for her portrayal as SA’s first serial killer profiler for Showmax’s Catch Me A Killer, which began airing last Thursday.
Catch Me A Killer is based on the memoir of Micki Pistorius, who was South Africa’s first serial killer profiler in real life. Hope says she is not shocked by the excellent reception to the show as audiences all over the world seem fascinated by serial killers, and the people who hunt them.
“The fact that these serial killers and victims were all real people, and the crimes happened so recently, shocks me,” she told Independent Media Lifestyle.
“This show goes further, it’s a ‘whydunit’ more than a ‘whodunit’.”
The 10-part series follows Hope as a newly qualified forensic psychologist who is out to catch some of South Africa’s most infamous killers such as the Cleveland Killer, also known as The Imperial Avenue Murderer, who was convicted in 2011 of killing 11 women.
Critics are especially praising Hope’s portrayal of the ‘underdog’ as during the time the show is set in, most of the profilers dealing with serial killers were male, and even then the ‘psychology of a killer’ was met with derision amongst the male-dominated police service.
Hope however jumped at the chance to portray the character of Pistorius, saying “My agent sent me the first two episodes and genuinely, they were the best scripts I’d read in a really long time.”
The show also features Steven Ward and newcomer Donna Cormack-Thomson as series regulars, with the supporting cast changing each episode but includes appearances from Lemogang Tsipa, Waldemar Schultz, Ivan Zimmermann, Frank Rautenbach, Carel Nel, Louw Venter, Albert Pretorius and Sean Cameron Michael.
Hope also had some good things to say about her South African colleagues. “I felt so fulfilled getting to go to work every day with this incredible crew and cast. It was both intellectually and emotionally stimulating in the best ways.”
To get ready for the role, Hope worked closely with the real serial killer profiler as well.
“I felt a huge sense of responsibility playing Micki and doing her justice and I was incredibly lucky to have a huge amount of help. Micki herself really guided me through it, both in understanding the academic side and also taking care of me when the darkness reached in.
“Our WhatsApp thread has a special place in my heart,” she added.
For lovers of ‘the evil that people do’, the series will be more than enough to make you even more paranoid in public. Check out the trailer:
