These passengers might have preferred snakes on a plane, honestly.
A couple of unwanted stowaways had made their way onto a Delta flight from Amsterdam to Detroit. The maggots fell onto disgusted passengers from an overhead compartement while midair on Tuesday, SkyNews reports.
Chaos broke out when these “absolutely gross” bugs started raining down on passengers, forcing the Delta flight to make a U-turn about an hour into the nine-hour trip.
Passengers reported the back of the plane was basically teeming with the larvae that were emanating from a rotten fish, it later emerged. Someone had brought the infested fish in their luggage, only for all hell to break loose when they were all in the air:
“My family and I were in the row directly in front of the maggots,” said one passenger, who goes by Nisha_16 on the forum Reddit.
“The lady right behind us told the flight attendants the maggots were falling on her head. I turned around and they were wiggling around on the seat… Absolutely gross.”
The passenger added that one of their carry-on bags was next to the “disgusting” one, and that the suspected culprit was still seated and did not exit the plane at the end of the flight.
“Really lovely to be 2 hours into an 8 hour @Delta to Amsterdam and find out there is rotten fish and maggots hitching a ride with us,” one passenger named Kelce tweeted in a since-deleted post about the flight from hell, which wound up being rerouted back to Europe, per the New York Post.
The X poster told the Daily Mail that the passenger whose suitcase was responsible for the disgusting debacle was detained. The publication added that the suitcase was designated to be burned.
Delta confirmed that the aircraft returned to the gate, where it was removed from service for cleaning, and passengers were placed on the next available flight.
Someone said they had to wait an extra day for a new connecting flight on another airline.
According to Kelce, the airline gave travellers 8,000 free miles, hotel room compensation and a $30 meal ticket in the event they were delayed overnight.
