The South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) is continuing with its ‘Open Night’ experience in 2024 after the massive success of its 2023 program.
The open nights are free, but a ticketing system means you must be quick to book a seat. This year, the Open Nights will occur on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month at 8PM.
South African Astronomical Observatory is the national centre for optical and infrared astronomy in South Africa and was established in 1972. The observatory is run by the National Research Foundation of South Africa and is located in, you guessed it, Observatory.
The primary telescopes are located in Sutherland, which is 370 kilometres away.
Its main mission is to support basic research in astronomy and astrophysics by providing scientists with world-class facilities, but SAAO also promotes astronomy and astrophysics with outreach programs such as the Open Nights to educate residents about physics and astronomy.

This is one of Cape Town’s best ‘unknown’ experiences and one that the whole family will enjoy. If you’re interested in booking a seat for upcoming evenings, you can do so here.
For the hardcore stargazers, SAAO also has a VR Tour of its Sutherland observatory for some relaxing ASMR vibes.
