Mark March 10 on your calendars as the 96th Academy Awards will celebrate the best of what 2023 had to offer, with notable movies like Oppenheimer, Poor Things, Killers of the Flower Moon, and of course, Barbie leading the pack with multiple nominations.
While the nominations are obviously a big part of the show, many viewers tune into the Oscars to keep an eye out for record-breaking wins, awkward moments, and opening monologues. Well, we do anyway.
This year, Jimmy Kimmel is back to host, returning for the fourth time, and already making this an awards ceremony to remember with a newly released teaser trailer enveloped in Barbieland.
The Academy is still swallowing lumps for not nominating Greta Gerwig for directing Barbie, and Kimmel is letting them have it.
In a lengthy new teaser that is already going viral, the Jimmy Kimmel Live host follows the yellow brick road in Barbieland to make it to Oscarland, with Barbie cast members Kate McKinnon, Helen Mirren, and the film‘s Oscar nominees America Ferrera and Ryan Gosling helping him reach his destination, per IndieWire:
Along the way, McKinnon parodies co-star Ferrera’s iconic “Barbie” speech, penned by co-writers Noah Baumbach and Gerwig, while Gosling says he is eager to cheer on Gerwig in the Best Director category. Gosling, at least half in character, is in for a rude awakening.
“Good thing Greta has got [Best] Director in the bag!” Gosling says in the promo. Upon being told that Gerwig in fact was not nominated, he screams.
Gosling conveyed his disappointment in a statement, expressing regret over the absence of recognition for both Gerwig and lead actress Margot Robbie in their respective categories. Gerwig is nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay and Robbie may win the accolade as an executive producer for Barbie if it bags Best Picture.
Take it away ‘Kimmy Jimmel’ (you’ll get the joke soon):
You will surely remember the whole ‘Barbenheimer’ debacle, where the twin blockbusters became a viral phenomenon, inspiring people to book double features and then debate which film was the best. In the end, Barbie won the box office, raking in nearly $1.5 billion worldwide, becoming Warner Bros.’ most profitable movie to date, as well as the highest-grossing film ever directed by a woman. So, yes, it is odd that Greta was snubbed.
Oddly, Barbie earned eight nominations while Oppenheimer managed a solid 13 nominations. Check out all the nominations over here.
It is kind of ironic then, all things considered, that the teaser shows the Oscars buzz orientated around Barbie, without ever actually fully acknowledging it.
The 2024 Academy Awards will take place March 10 at 4 p.m. PT / 7 p.m. ET on ABC. Hopefully, we will see Kimmel roasting the Academy even harder then, too.
