Steve Hofmeyr’s son, Devon Hofmeyr, and two others have been arrested pending charges of public violence, obstructing a police officer, and assaulting a worker.
Devon, Willem Petzer, and Tewie Wessels appeared in court on Monday in Groblersdal, Limpopo, on charges of public violence. The fourth accused, Dries Olivier, could not attend claiming illness.
The charges emerge from an event in January when the trio were part of a protest outside the magistrate’s court in Groblersdal where they demanded the release of Piet Groenewald and Stephan Greeff. The demonstration escalated, and they now stand accused of assaulting a worker and allegedly unleashing a security dog on him, per Maroela Media:
About 100 protesters, mostly from the Bittereinders movement, descended on the town with the Transvaals Vierkleur of the then Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek, to demand their release. The marchers and police members clashed and Francois van der Merwe, a leader of the Bittereinders, was arrested.
Devon is the director and leader of the group of men in a movement called the Bittereinders, loosely translated to ‘never say die’, which essentially promotes the interests of Afrikaners. They’ve been known to be quite outspoken, clashing with the EFF and Julius Malema on several occasions.
The state indicated on Monday that bail would be opposed. However, the trio’s defence made headlines as they said they were ready to proceed with a bail application as all their addresses had already been confirmed by the police.
According to the state, the investigating officer in the case must still visit the three men’s residences to confirm the addresses so the case is still ongoing.
Meanwhile, Steve Hofmeyr took to social media to ask people to contribute financially to the legal fees of his son, per The South African.
He thanked supporters and said that he prays that the court will approve bail on Thursday. In his post, he mentioned that legal fees can reach exorbitant amounts and implied that the lack of finances often lead to accused who are innocent, to not get quality legal representation.
Eish hey.
