Coach-turned-politician Peter de Villiers finds himself facing yet another controversy after the GOOD Party announced his suspension following ‘allegations of sexual misconduct’.
GOOD Secretary General Brett Herron revealed in a formal statement that the party took action in response to a party member’s complaint against Peter de Villiers.
Herron went on to emphasise the party’s commitment to combating sexual misconduct and gender-based violence. De Villiers’ suspension is a preventive measure, awaiting the conclusion of disciplinary processes to determine any violations of the party’s rules.
“GOOD’s constitution is unambiguous on gender relations and gender-based violence. The constitution applies to all members, regardless of position. De Villiers’ suspension is not a finding of guilt; it reflects the seriousness of the allegations,” he commented.
After a so-so tenure as Springbok coach, De Villiers leapt into politics and was sworn in as a member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament in May 2023.
In 2008 De Villiers was pulled into a sextape scandal after a Saturday newspaper named him as the victim of a blackmail scam by an official and player who were holding a videotape showing the coach involved in a sexual deed as leverage to keep a player in the team.
De Villiers denied the accusations and dared the blackmailers to produce the tape. “There is no video and there never was an incident. I heard about this before the All Black test, but there was no blackmail either.”
The person who allegedly made this threat was identified as Chris Hewitt, the team’s communications manager. SARU declared the matter closed following a hearing which led to Hewitt’s resignation. Hewitt died in a plane crash a month after resigning.
