Two Russian teenagers were arrested in Spain and accused of killing their adoptive mother this week.
Silvia López Gayubas, 48, was found bound, gagged and stabbed in the boot of a car on Wednesday night, in her home garage in Castro Urdiales, Cantabria.
Police are treating the death as murder, with Spain’s Civil Guard swooping in to detain her two sons as the lead suspects in the case. The police were led to the unnamed children, 13 and 16, after they called their grandmother, about an alleged kidnapping, the Daily Mail reported. The pair were eventually discovered in a local park after a search ended around 2AM.
Initial inquiries suggest that the 16-year-old assaulted his mother in the neck with a sharp object. Subsequently, they both ran away and feigned abduction in an attempt to deceive the authorities.
As per Spanish legal regulations, the 13-year-old is deemed too young to face charges and will instead be placed under the care of social services. A team of psychologists and healthcare experts will need to watch over him for the time being.
Police worked through the night to try and unravel the mysterious circumstances of a mother found dead in a garage and reports of her two sons allegedly kidnapped.
Roadblocks were set up overnight to locate the boys while investigators explored the avenue of a potential attack of domestic violence.
With Ms Lopez’ father working out of town overnight, they judged it improbable he was involved.
‘He didn’t believe it. He was devastated,’ a source close to the investigation said, as reported by El Diario.
When the boys were eventually found in a hilly area in the local park, one tried to flee and neither owned up to the crime.
A regional government spokesman confirmed that the older brother was suspected of killing Ms Lopez, while the younger of the two boys is currently with youth prosecutors.
