Dean Carelse, a former Grey High School teacher and well-known sports coach, was arrested in March 2021 after police raided his home in Queensland, Australia.
The 43-year-old was arrested and charged with the possession and distribution of child exploitation material.
Carelse was promptly suspended from his coaching position at Water Polo Queensland and was set to be deported after pleading guilty to almost 20 charges, including 14 counts of indecent treatment of a child under 16.
Around March 2022, Carelse spent 271 days in custody and was handed a sentence of two years, suspended after six months for three years, according to ABC News.
It was reported at the time that Carelse had more than 2,000 pictures of child exploitation pictures on his phone, some of the student’s genitals in their togs. It’s also alleged that he created an Instagram account under a fake name, ‘Taylor Brooke’, which he used to groom children.
In November 2022 – the last this sicko appeared in headlines – he had reportedly returned to South Africa after being deported from Australia. IOL‘s sources confirmed that he was living at his mother’s home in Gqeberha, and refused to talk about the matter because it was a closed chapter.
Unfortunately, there have been no restrictions on his movements since.
Now, chillingly, ABC News reports that Carelse has been working as a children’s lifeguard in the UK after Australian police did not share evidence of international victims.
An ABC investigation has traced the former Sunshine Coast teacher and coach, Dean Carelse, to Butlin’s Minehead Resort — a family holiday park in south-west England — where he has worked since early last year.
The resort’s Splash Waterworlds, where Carelse worked, allows children over the age of eight to swim without adult supervision, according to Butlin’s website.
A UK background check failed to pick up his convictions, which include grooming a 13-year-old boy for sex and 14 counts of indecent treatment of a child under 16 while he was a teacher and coach at a private Sunshine Coast school in the late 2010s.
Butlin’s confirmed Carelse was employed on their lifeguard team for the past 10 months but confirmed he was sacked after the ABC made contact. Who knows how many boys he traumatised in those few months:
Butlin’s spokesman said the recruitment process had been in line with government guidance and included “enhanced DBS checks and right to work status, which came back clear”.
“The team member falsified information on their application,” the spokesman said.
Apparently, there had been “no issues of complaints raised” against Carelse in his time as a lifeguard:
The spokesman said the “severity” of the case had led the company to review “our policy and [we] can confirm additional checks for existing international team and future international applicants will be carried out”.
How about a simple Google search next time?
It seems bureaucratic barriers are allowing this man to walk scots-free. When he was arrested in Queensland, a South African investigator said South African police had requested more information about local victims. However, because the SAPS would require a formal request via an international treaty, nothing ever came of it.
The investigator, who was not authorised to speak publicly, said this information may have been able to help them identify local victims and bring charges against Carelse, which could have kept him in the country.
The investigator also mentioned that info could have helped them pinpoint an operation into an alleged paedophile ring in private SA schools – code-named Operation Nemo – which Carelse is believed to have been in.
That might bring together the fact that Carelse had a connection with another disgraced former water polo coach, David Mackenzie, who resigned from his role at St Andrew’s College in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown) in 2018.
This massive fall from grace from a man who once coached a certain Springbok rugby captain (Siya Kolisi, shame) hasn’t stopped him from doing what he thinks he does best.
Watch Dean get another job minding children soon. Sies.
