The next 90s hit film to get the reboot treatment is the classic Patrick Swayze film Road House, and this time Jake Gyllenhaal has been tapped to be the romancing bouncer.
The original Road House starred Swayze as Dalton, a ‘cooler’ who is hired by the owner of a small-town dive bar in a small-town USA. The seedy bar, The Double Deuce, is terrorised by a bunch of troublemakers, chief among them the villainous local entrepreneur Brad Wesley who wants things to stay as they are. “Nuh-uh,” says Dalton as he roundhouse kicks his way through the movie, whilst simultaneously wooing local doctor Elizabeth Clay.
It was the classic 90s movie, and Swayze was the quintessential 90s hero. But now the Swayz is dead, and Gyllenhaal gets his opportunity to woo the ladies and whup the bad guys. With some help from modern action sequences and explosive CGI.
As far as reboots go, this is an odd choice, but seeing as how few unique ideas seem to be floating around Hollywood lately, they could have done worse.
Gyllenhaal is described as the perfect choice to take on the role with his “dynamic charisma, bursting with sexual allure and mischievousness.” The cast also includes Billy Magnussen, Jessica Williams, Arturo Castro, Daniela Melchior, and brawler deluxe Conor McGregor.
Directed by Edge of Tomorrow’s Doug Liman, and announced as the opening night film for this year’s SXSW Film and TV Festival, Road House will be available on Prime Video from March 21st.
For those of you who prefer your bad-asses with better hair and tighter buns, the original film still kicks butt and should be watched before this one – in our Patrick Swayze-loving opinion.
