Time Out has just released its latest report on the world’s best cities.
Based on the trusty Time Out Index, which is created from a survey of more than 20,000 city dwellers around the world, along with its own network of editors, Cape Town has been ranked magnificently.
The Mother City has always been in and around the travel publication’s Best Cities in the World list, dawdling around number 11 or so. But now, our stellar city has reached whole new heights.
As Forbes notes, the criteria on the Time Out Index include food (both quality and affordability), culture, nightlife, how the city makes people feel and more. The list reflects cities that are great places to visit—but also to live.
“As our global ranking shows, cities haven’t just pulled together through the pandemic—they’ve come out reborn and are back, better than ever when it comes to going out and experiencing great things to do,” Time Out’s travel editor Grace Beard told me in an interview. “Time Out’s 2024 list of the world’s best cities is not only an essential travel guide for the coming year, spotlighting the most exciting places on earth right now for food, nightlife and culture, but it’s also a global snapshot of city living.”
This year, Cape Town is sitting pretty as the SECOND best city in the world, just under the city that never sleeps, New York City. Can you believe it? That’s right, beam with pride, show them what we’re made of.
New York City earned top honours thanks to several factors, including its food scene, culture, beauty and happy residents. Plus, the rest of the world apparently wants to live there: In the survey, 15% of respondents said they would like to relocate to the Big Apple.
Time Out mentioned Cape Town’s natural beauty that makes people smitten, along with its “multicultural soul”, its “creative landscape… alive with new energy” and for famously being “the most LGBTQ+-friendly city on the continent”.
Of course, the new Time Out Market Cape Town got a mention, along with the Investec Cape Town Art Fair.
Cape Town scored highly across the board, the publication said, adding that “a whopping 100% of locals said the city is beautiful and that it made them happy, while Cape Town’s culture scene ranked highest in the world for its quality.”
