The much anticipated Back to Black is directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and follows Amy Winehouse’s life and career, from her early days as a jazz singer in north London to her international fame as a Grammy winner.

Written by Matt Greenhalgh, Amy is played by Marisa Abela, who was last seen in Barbie. The film also stars Jack O’Connell, Eddie Marsan, Juliet Cowan and Lesley Manville.

Following Winehouse’s death in 2011, several directors tried to develop biopic projects, but none ever materialised. Winehouse’s estate stated in 2018 that they had inked an agreement to produce a biopic about her life and career. By July 2022, StudioCanal had pushed forward with production, with filming taking place in London from January to April 2023.

The film is scheduled to be released in the United Kingdom on 12 April 2024, and in the United States on 10 May 2024.
