The town of Grindavik in Iceland is facing severe consequences after a volcano erupted on the Reykjanes peninsula, causing multiple homes to catch fire.

Experts labelled this eruption as the “worst-case scenario,” exacerbated by the failure of defences constructed after a previous eruption in December.

Although barriers of earth and rock partially contained the lava, breaches occurred, leading to its entry into the town, necessitating evacuations and resulting in the ignition of buildings.

The Guardian posted a drone video from the town showing at least three houses being engulfed by fire:

Gudni Johannesson, Iceland’s President, urged unity and compassion for those displaced. Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir outlined government measures for evacuated residents, and the alert level was elevated to “emergency.”

Despite the grim situation, Jakobsdóttir expressed hope, stating, “Today is a black day for Grindavik and all of Iceland, but the sun will rise again. Together, we will navigate this crisis and whatever challenges lie ahead. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.”

This marks the fifth eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula since 2021, underscoring Iceland’s geologically active environment.
