SA Woman Shares Outrage Over “Delusional” Cape Town Landlords Listing Shoddy Apartments At High Rental Prices

"Are these landlords delusional????? why is apartment hunting in cape town a joke", she captioned the much-watched video that racked up over 690,000 views after being posted earlier this week.

“We should not be spending our hard-earned money on places that are neglected and be gaslit into thinking that this is the norm…If you are spending R20,000 on a place to live, it needs to be livable”.

That’s local lass Leah De Góis giving landlords her hot take on TikTok, sharing pictures of an R20,000 rental listing from Property24 that comes with a stunning view but a less-than-stellar kitchen.

“Are these landlords delusional????? why is apartment hunting in cape town a joke”, she captioned the much-watched video that racked up over 690,000 views after being posted earlier this week.

The two two-bedroom apartment to rent is in Sea Point just off the Main Road, complete with “old-school charm” according to Property24, and “a probably mouldy” kitchen, according to Leah – all for an overblown price of R20,000 a month.

In an update about the “Sea Point horror apartment story”, Leah divulged that the listing no longer displays images of the kitchen – which indeed proves that apartment hunting in Cape Town is a bit of a joke.

Another ‘horror’ listing shared by one of her followers was also explored on Property24, this one a “neat two-bedroom apartment located on De Lorentz Street” in Gardens. The 83-square-metre apartment is on sale for R2,5 million, with a description of the kitchen and bathroom put in favourable terms while showing images of a slightly sub-par space.

“As this is an older block both bedrooms are spacious and share an adjacent bathroom. Kitchen with serving hatch/breakfast nook, enclosed balcony off living area with city views,” reads the listing. Except it looks like this:

As she aptly mentioned in another video about the saga, we should share our outrage and have this conversation on social media because landlords are getting away with way too much and not providing enough in return.

Consider yourself called out if you’re a landlord and seen and heard if you’re apartment hunting right now.
