Golf estates are fine and all, but how about getting one up on your wealthy friends by having a private runway in your backyard?
Real estate agencies in the US are now offering houses built in estates around private airfields – aptly named ‘air ranches’.
These ‘fly-in communities’, which are commonly found in rural locations around the United States, are closed neighbourhoods targeted to aeroplane owners and enthusiasts who like to store their aircraft on their property: either in a large garage, driveway, or separate hangar.

Unlike ordinary neighbourhoods, these private properties only allow community members access to their airstrips and hangars.
Another unique feature of these ‘air ranches’ is that street signs and mailboxes are built extra low at less than one metre, to avoid being clipped by plane wings. Furthermore, street names are frequently aviation-themed, ranging from Boeing Road to Cessna Drive.
While many of these airparks are considered high-end, with properties that have amenities that cost several million dollars, there are also quite a few that are not, so if you’re one of the plebs that plan on only having a flying car, you can still feel right at home.
Needless to say, these neighbourhoods are only for those who don’t mind a G650ER screaming past your kitchen window early on Sunday morning.
