The family of missing German tourist Nick Frischke remains hopeful following a reported sighting of the missing young man in Plettenberg Bay.
According to the sighting, someone fitting Frischke’s description had been spotted mumbling incoherently in German.
The National Prosecuting Authority has confirmed the sighting, saying “According to the tourist, apparently the young man looked confused, and repeatedly kept saying in German, “112 kommen, 112 kommen”; which is an emergency number in Germany.”
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said “We have responded… police have received several such tips/sightings and they have followed the information, but it has not yielded any positive results.”
Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie confirmed that the missing person’s investigation is still ongoing.
“No record of the missing person [was] seen in the area. The question remains whether the visitors had reported their observation to the local police in order for them to pursue the information immediately.”
“He is still regarded as a missing person. All resources were exhausted in an effort to trace him, but without any positive result.”
Andre Frischke, Frischke’s father, said that the family became aware of allegations that their son had been seen in Plettenberg Bay and has since begged people to keep an eye out for him.
He stated that fliers about Nick’s disappearance had been created for distribution, and the family had set up an R20,000 reward for information about his disappearance.“It’s now over nine months, almost 40 weeks. I miss my son, Nick, very much… this time is so unbearable. Please help me! Where’s my Nick?”
According to News24, Plettenberg Bay’s Crime Prevention Association operations director, Otto Olivier, says that they are on high alert after the sighting.
“According to the information we received, Nick seemed to have been walking around the isolated area of Nature’s Valley. Our crew members did an extensive search in the area, but unfortunately, our searches proved to be unsuccessful. At this point, we don’t know if he was in the area and left again. We did the searches and found nothing to corroborate the messages coming through to us.
“We will be keeping our eyes and ears to the ground should anything resurface, but right now all searches were unsuccessful.”
Hout Bay Community Policing Forum has however confirmed that there were no current searches ongoing in the Hout Bay area.
“The search was called off some time ago, and nothing has resumed as there has been no further investigation. The area has been thoroughly searched by private teams and volunteers for weeks when we got wind of the disappearance.”
Meanwhile, two men accused of being involved in the disappearance of the youngster appeared in the Wynberg Regional Court where they face 10 charges including ‘performing acts aimed at bringing about a pattern of criminal activity, four counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, housebreaking, three counts of illegal possession of firearms and a count of illegal possession of ammunition’.
