The ocean is a force to be reckoned with.
I have had my fair share of wave-throttling and tide-pushing to know that one needs to respect the sea and know one’s limits. I am sure we’ve all been there, done that, got the rock-scraped knees.
Recently, one brazen dude got a lot more than he bargained for after deciding to jump into a wild part of the water somewhere along Cape Town’s coast, causing him to swim for his life as he tried to hoist himself onto the safety of the nearby rocks. The rocks, while serving as his landing strip, also posed as possible pummelers when he was being jerked around by the waves.
Briefly reported that the video went viral on TikTok, with watchers holding their breath as they witnessed the young man battling to keep his head above the water, using a great deal of energy to escape the waves and currents.
The unidentified swimmer appears to have been filmed by a friend, whose initial excitement turned into a panic as they helplessly watched him swim for his life.
One of the friends can be heard saying, “This is bad!” through nervous giggles.
Every time you think the oke has made it, he gets pulled back down and out again:
@explore_sa_ Definitely dont try this in CT! (Via: @Matty) #capetown #tiktoksa #llandudno ♬ YKWIM? – 东 百 下小 雨
The tag of the video suggests it could have happened at Llundudno, which has waves that have been known to take a few lives in the past.
Commenters expressed their worry and concern, with one recognising what a fiercely strong swimmer this guy must be to have kept his head above ‘white water’.
In water that is aerated, AKA filled with air (which is what causes waves to look white) it is harder to tread and stay buoyant. In normal water, you can float, but if you jump into aerated water, it is highly likely that you could sink straight to the bottom and drown.
With around 8.4 million views on the video, this is certainly an activity one should NOT try in Cape Town.
