A New York Judge, Frederic Block, has released two members of the infamous Gambino crime family on bail after declaring that the new crop of mafioso “aren’t killing people anymore”.
Block believes that the younger generation is more into slashing tires than throats, and has become ‘softer’.
On Thursday, two members of the Gambino family, Diego Tantillo, 48, and Angelo Gradilone, 57, were allowed freedom in time for Thanksgiving after appearing in Brooklyn Federal Court for their bond appeal. The pair was among ten suspected Mafia members, known as the Gambino 10, who were charged on November 8 with using ‘shady tactics’ to take over New York’s valued waste-carrying and demolition firms.
The Gambino family is one of the ‘Five Families’ that dominate New York’s criminal underworld. Despite his reservations, the judge decided to free the two guys for the holidays because they weren’t “as brutal as the old guard mobsters”.
“You know, in the past, we would let murderers out on bail. We don’t have anything close to that in this particular case. Fortunately, I guess the younger generation of mafioso aren’t killing people these days.”
“We should have a human aspect to us,” Judge Block said. “We’re gonna have Thanksgiving on Thursday. Maybe I should try to let them out tomorrow.”
Five other members of the family were also released on bail.
In September, two Gambino 10 mobsters reportedly made a scene at a restaurant in New Jersey when the owner asked them to leave after they got into a fight with another client. The duo were furious over this treatment, and one of the men threatened to burn the building down.
Hours after everything appeared to have calmed down, the owner and his wife were getting into their car when a man hit him over the head, held a knife to his neck, and threatened to kill him. His spouse tried to run but was beaten to the ground. The man with the knife then allegedly slashed the vehicle’s tires before leaving the pair somewhat unharmed.
This supposed ‘benevolent’ treatment seems to have prompted the judge to be lenient on the mafioso as the restaurant owner would likely have taken a dirt nap under the ‘old guard’. Thank you for only slashing tyres and not killing someone, here’s your freedom as a reward.
Al Capone must be having a good laugh, wherever he is.
