Anyone who happened to witness the horrific stabbing of a female student at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) on Saturday morning has been left traumatised.
The gut-wrenching attack took place in full view of other students who captured the incident on their phones, making the footage go viral. In the videos, the suspect can be seen repeatedly stabbing the woman, who tries to stop him by lifting her hand. The man then stands around as some male students try to intervene. He was eventually captured by students who allegedly assaulted him.
It was reported via IOL that the perpetrator stabbed the woman, who is reportedly his wife, 10 times as she became increasingly covered in blood lying on the floor. The footage of the actual stabbing is not for sensitive viewers.

Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said a 30-year-old man, who is a student at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), was arrested and is currently under police guard in hospital:
“Belhar police registered an attempted murder case following a stabbing incident on Saturday afternoon at a student accommodation in Belhar, where a 26-year old female student was injured.
“Circumstances surrounding this stabbing incident are under investigation. The injured victim was transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Investigations continue,” said Van Wyk.
CPUT commended the men who first responded to the victim, adding that their bravery likely saved the woman’s life. The university’s spokesperson Lauren Kansley said the university offered assistance to students who may have been traumatised by the incident.
The female CPUT student sustained serious injuries and was transferred to Tygerberg Hospital for emergency surgery. She is currently recovering.
“She is being supported by CPUT management and at this stage our focus is on her recovery and well-being and notifying her family. The alleged perpetrator has been arrested and will await a court appearance,” Kansley said
“Therapy has been offered to fellow CPUT students who may have been traumatised by this incident, and we will roll out face-to-face counselling next week. We will also work in conjunction with SAPS to ensure a full investigation is carried out. Our focus is on supporting the student and the others who witnessed it,” said Kansley.
Meanwhile, UWC spokesperson Gasant Abarder said they condemned any act of gender-based violence; “At a time when UWC pronounced its zero tolerance for gender-based violence and communicated its condemnation of any acts of gender-based violence and femicide, it notes a disturbing report of the stabbing of a female CPUT student on 11 November 2023.”
Abarder confirmed via News24 that the student has been suspended from campus and his private residence, adding that “Perpetrators of such gender-based violence have no place at our campuses”.
