Police have confirmed that a man drowned in the Silvermine Dam in the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) on Sunday.
Bystanders reported the drowning park rangers who immediately got in touch with the City of Cape Town’s 107 control room, who dispatched National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) divers.
The recovery divers located the body of the man believed to be a Cape Town local, and transferred him to the city’s forensic pathology services.
“All efforts are now concentrated on the family and those affected by this sad incident.”
At this stage, there is no confirmation of what led to the drowning, but the dam has “closed to the public until further notice due to the drowning”.
“Table Mountain National Park will continue to provide updates on progress being made once the information becomes available and we kindly request visitors to be patient with us during this time.”
The dam, which lies in the middle of the TMNP region, is a popular site amongst locals and tourists, especially in hot summer months.
