Zac Efron’s fresh-faced boyish charm turned heads when he rose to fame in the early days, appearing in the likes of High School Musical and 17 Again.

But over recent years, the actor has been looking increasingly strange and people are doing double takes to try and figure it out.

Speculation over what happened to Zac’s face and whether he had plastic surgery started in April 2021 when he appeared in Bill Nye’s Earth Day Musical special for Facebook Watch, which led to questions from fans over his chin.

“WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO ZAC EFRON LMAO, looks like he got stung by a bee,” Twitter user @KingAmadDiallo wrote at the time.

Then, in September 2022, the dude responded to rumours he underwent plastic surgery in an interview with Entertainment Tonight:

In the interview, Zac called the rumors “funny” and explained that his different-looking face was due to a jaw injury in 2013—not surgery. “My mom told me. I never really read the internet, so, I don’t really care,” he said. He continued, “It was funny. It sucks. I almost died, but we’re good.”

Poor Zac broke his jaw and had to have his mouth wired shut after he was running through his house in socks, slipped, hit his face on the granite corner of a fountain and lost consciousness. When he woke up, his chin bone was hanging off his face, according to Men’s Health.

So yes, he had some work done to fix this terrible accident but that hasn’t stopped fans from expressing their shock over his new look during Entertainment Weekly’s cover shoot for his new film, The Iron Claw, out on December 22.

The New York Post reported how celebrity facial plastic surgeon Dr Sam Rizk believes Efron may have gotten other work done, though.

“He probably took the opportunity, in addition to correcting it, to do something better,” he said.

“He might have had jaw advancements where they pull the chin a little bit more forward because his chin looks a little bit more prominent. Or a chin implant or mandibular angle implants [in the lower jaw] or all of the above.”

Dr Rizk says Efron always had a straight eyebrow, but now he has more of an arch and an effeminate look, which indicates he had some type of brow lift or Botox. He also says the A-Lister has “fuller” cheeks and believes this is not necessarily cheek implants, but “most likely” filler injections.

Meanwhile, purveyors have been rather rude about his dramatically changed mug:

“Ruined. Fillers and Botox makes him look like a 59 year old . . .  He was so beautiful,” lamented @curtisjunk.

“The plastic surgeon who did this to him should be [in] jail,” added @memememe_andme.

Others compared him to evil movie characters; “I could see him being the Joker,” wrote bryanz212d.

At least Zac doesn’t seem to mind the criticism, telling Men’s Health, “If I valued what other people thought of me to the extent that they may think I do, I definitely wouldn’t be able to do this work”.
