An Australian farmer proved why the Southern Hemisphere okes are just built differently after escaping the jaws of a crocodile by savagely biting the reptile’s eye. Good on ya, mate.
The cattle farmer, Colin Deveraux, stopped by a billabong (dam) while travelling near the Finniss River in the Northern Territory to fix fences when he had a run-in with a 3.2-metre saltwater crocodile.
Deveraux was watching some fish swimming in the river when the crocodile “latched” onto his right foot, shaking him like a “rag doll” and began dragging him into the water. Deveraux tried to free his trapped leg by kicking at the crocodile, but it didn’t seem to be of any help. So the farmer decided to give the croc some of his own medicine and sank his teeth into the reptile’s eyesocket.
“I was in such an awkward position… but by accident, my teeth caught his eyelid. It was pretty thick, like holding onto leather, but I jerked back on his eyelid and he let go” he said.
“I leapt away and took off with great steps up to where my car was. He chased me for a bit, maybe four metres, but then stopped.”
Deveraux used a towel and some rope to stop the bleeding in his leg before being driven 130 kilometres to the Royal Darwin Hospital by his brother.
“If he [the crocodile] had bitten me somewhere else it would have been different,” he went on to say. “It means I have to change what I do. I’ve been wandering around that swamp land for far too long, repairing fences and living my life, but it’s opened my eyes.”
Crocodiles are protected by law in the Northern Territories due to their huge scientific and human interest, as well as attracting loads of tourists to the area. The last fatal crocodile attack happened in April this year on the Kennedy River in Cape York Peninsula, Queensland.
Moral of the story? When being dragged to your death by a nightmarish reptile, bite it in the eyeball.
