South African disk-jockey royalty, Barney Simon and Alex Jay, will be hosting the mother of all throwback parties this January at the Stadium in Green Point, and the guestlist reads like a Now That’s What I Call Music CD cover.
Joining some of our local musos such as Shawny B, Ian Fraser, and Nádine, will be a line-up that includes the likes of Technotronic, Snap, Dr Alban, Haddaway, Twenty4Seven, and 2 Unlimited. No No Limits baby!
There’s still plenty of time to get your lumo green pants out of storage for this one, but nobody can deny the drawcard songs such as ‘What is Love,’ and ‘Slave to the Music’ will be for those of us who remember a time before kids and careers sucked the life out of us.
You just wait until Snap’s I’ve Got The Power kicks in – your funky hip and buggered knee will be forgotten for a few hours. Uh-Uh-UHH-UHH-UHH-UHH.
‘It’s unlike anything that’s been staged in South Africa,’ says Barney Simon, adding, ‘It’s fresh and left field and I have no doubt a lot of 100% retro-music fans are getting excited reading this and thinking: finally!’
Damn straight Barney. Alex Jay added ‘The organisers have done extensive research, and the 100% RETRO concept serves a very strong market niche of music lovers. It’s going to be the party of all parties to kick off the year. We are super amped. Come and join us and FEEL YOUNG AGAIN!’
I’m probably way too excited about this event for my ageing heart to bear, but reading names like Dr Alban and 2Unlimited on the setlist takes me back to lazy summer holidays at the municipal swimming pool with neon-coloured bangles up to my elbows and the smell of Piz Buin and Kreols everywhere.
Here’s the details if you can relate:
Once-offs, has-beens and almost-weres for everyone!
