Get in, loser. We’re going to Walmart.
Okay, well, if we were in America, we totally would, because the multinational retail corporation is finally making fetch happen.
Walmart just managed to capture the glossiness and the appeal of the original Mean Girls in a short advert and we’re all worried that this will be the best reboot we’ll ever get.
As The Daily Beast notes, the upcoming movie musical spinoff coming out this January looks far less promising next to this holiday season ad. Three of the original four Plastics from Mean Girls reunited to star in it while not even bothering to pick up the call for the Mean Girls musical, so you know, that says something for the shop, which is a cool shop now.
In the ad, Lacey Chabert and Amanda Seyfried reprise their roles as Gretchen Weiners and Karen Smith, respectively, with Lindsay Lohan taking front and centre as Cady Heron.
Chabert is now the mom of the popular girls, and cheesily tries to recreate Regina’s line: “Get in, sweetie! We’re going deal shopping.”
Naturally, Rachel McAdams is not present in this ad because, let’s face it, Regina wouldn’t be caught dead in a Walmart advertisement. Plus, McAdams was probably too busy filming Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret or one of her many other post-Mean Girls hits to make time for Walmart.
The Walmart ad does an amazing job of condensing all of the big moments from Mean Girls into its runtime, from “That’s so fetch” to Karen’s busty weather reports and that gym lecture to appearances from Kevin Gnapoor (Rajiv Surendra) and Damian (Daniel Franzese).
This recreation, a simple minute and a half of nostalgic moments, is enough to remind us why we love 2000s-era movies and an example of why we don’t need long-winded reboots.
