Velaa Private Island is the furthest possible place you can be from your glass cubicle on the seventh floor in the Cape Town CBD.
It’s far more likely that images of this island feature as desktop screensavers on your monitor, keeping you from hurling your printer in the general direction of your manager’s head. It’s November and the World Cup was tense. You need a holiday.
Located on the Noonu Atoll in the Maldives, the Velaa Private Island has just announced a very special holiday offer for those who enjoy the more luxurious version of ‘wellbeing destinations’.
For a paltry $1 million (R18 million) a week, you can rent out the whole island, which comes with 47 villas, a small army of staff, and a nine-hole golf course.
The golf course is by no means the biggest draw-card for this slice of paradise. The private island experience also features yachting, private massages, dinners at the first and only restaurant in the Maldives to be voted into Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants awards, dolphin-watching excursions at sunset, and exclusive use to Velaa’s ‘snow room’.
And if you are a thrill-seeker, why not try out kitesurfing, a private climbing wall, or latch on to the “Tandem Jetovator,” which flies up to seven metres above the water or dives below to three metres?
“Velaa is the epitome of privacy and luxury,” says general manager Wayne Milgate, “with everything from extravagant dining experiences to state-of-the-art water sports, and everything in between.”
The full island rental, on the other hand, “literally turns the island into a playground for you and your guests,” he says.
Milgate recommends coming to the property’s Japanese Teppanyaki restaurant Tavaru, the highest building on any Maldivian resort, “for the best sunsets on the island, best accompanied by a cocktail or mocktail as the sky streaks with pastel sorbet hues”.
How ever you prefer to spend your days at Velaa, you’ll be in good hands with ‘hospitality professionals who will attend to your every whim, whether you want to fly in a certain bottle of wine or hope to plan a surprise concert for your loved ones during your visit’.
A private chef will be at your disposal to prepare the catch of the day, such as pan-fried Red Emperor fillet with scallion pesto, ginger, fennel, and bouillabaisse, and limoncello mousse with candied lemon and a thyme biscuit.
Ja nee, this place is a billionaire’s wet dream at a millionaire’s price. Ahem.

If you are concerned that the price of a ‘fully private’ experience might make too much of a dent in your December bonus, you can always book the plebs experience and just stay for a night – that is of course if someone hasn’t called dibs on the whole place during that time.
Check out the booking portal on Tripadvisor for prices and availability.
Now our December holiday at the in-law’s bungalow in Buffelsbaai looks kak boring.
