If you’re still wondering whether your university-bound child made the right career choice, the latest Industry Report from CareerJunction should provide some clarity on whether you’ll be retiring early or bankrolling your precious little gift for the next fifteen years.
The list has identified some of the highest-paying jobs in South Africa right now, within a monthly salary bracket of R37,000 to R125,000.
The report is based on current supply and demand analysis and comes from 5,000 of the country’s biggest recruiters, agencies and anyone else who posts a vacancy on their platform.
The report shows a drop in the number of jobs in the last month compared to the same time last year, with demand for admin and office staff dropping off quite a bit. It’s tough times to be in office admin, but at least the Building and construction sector is popping with a recruiting increase of 22% for skilled professionals, so learn a new skill if ‘faxing documents’ was one of your KPIs.
As part of their report, CareerJunction ranked the ‘top 20 types of professions with the highest monthly salary offerings’, so if your kid is taking a gap year to figure out what they want to do, and you want to retire before 70, this is where you need to pay attention.
The usual suspects feature among the best-paying sectors such as Business & Management, Information Technology, and Architecture & Engineering. Within these sectors, Executive Management or Director is where you’d want to be with a monthly salary ranging between R91,000 and R125,000.
The IT sector is also still in the pound seats with Technical and Business Architects looking at between R65,000 and R90,000 per month.
Consulting Engineers can expect about R43,000 to R70,000 per month, Mechanical Engineers R33,000 to R66,000, and Civil or Structural Engineer R41,000 to R65,000 per month.
Some of the data is also affected by location as certain provinces have lower salaries for comparative jobs. It’s the old supply and demand thingy again – if you’re the only idiot in the village, your salary is going to be negotiable.

Before you force your little one to pursue a career in Business Management, just keep in mind that mo’ money does not always equate to mo’ happiness. Big paycheques often come with big sacrifices, but if it’s a price you’re willing to pay, then there’s plenty of money to be made out there.
