Let’s take a cruise down memory lane and revisit one of Camps Bay’s trendiest spots in 2004 – Baraza baby!
The funky tech house atmosphere at Baraza was the perfect temperature for the vibey crowd back then, with wall-to-wall pretty people milling about the fishbowl. Some of the fishes would funnel out to one of the more menacing nightclubs on Loop Street later that night, but others would stay and wait for something special to happen, and who knows, maybe even see legends being born.
Cape Town history is something we’re familiar with here at 2OV, being one of the city’s oldest observers of the peeps, and back in the day, our Raconteur-in-Chief bore witness to the decadent and colourful circus that was Cape Town at the beginning of the century. It was then, from die einste Baraza, that a younger Seth reported on a special kind of history in the making:
“We hit Baraza in Camps Bay last week Thursday. There were these two youngsters spicing some tunes with a keyboard, flute and all other sorts of paraphernalia. Even machines with ‘Roland’ emblazoned on the side!
Now listen to me. These kids were HOT! Hard to describe the music exactly. It’s the kind of music you’d play before going to rip Eclipse up. Upbeat, electric, funk. J*sus, I don’t know!
They’re called Goldfish. Do yourselves a favour and stop by Baraza before you go to Eclipse. I presume they’ll be there again.”
The kids were indeed HOT, and even though you might not recall Bazara in 2004, you know the story of Goldfish. Their debut album Caught in the Loop was released two years later, and the rest is history in the making.
The kids have done South Africa proud, and even though a lot of the hotspots of early 2000 may not be around anymore, it’s sometimes good to explore other, bigger, fishbowls.
