A Canadian fast-food chain came up with a genius way to attract lunchtime customers as well as ‘cheat’ the tax system a bit.
Good Fortune Burger, a restaurant chain in Toronto, has renamed all the food items on its menu after office supplies so customers can claim their food orders as business expenses. The changes were made on Uber Eats and other local apps as they encouraged customers to “eat and expense”.
The ‘new’ menu features clever titles for standard grub, like their signature Fortune Burger becoming Basic Steel Stapler, Parm Fries is CPU Wireless Mouse and the Double Your Fortune Burger is now called Ergonomic Aluminium Laptop Stand.
It’s a genius idea that likely borders on illegal. Good Fortune Burger says the promotion is called #RECEATS. Jon Purdy, Director of Operations at Good Fortune Burger said it’s only a bit of fun, and he doesn’t really expect people to claim their lunches as office supplies.
“We just wanted an opportunity to put a smile on some people’s faces and have them have a little bit of a giggle,” he told BlogTo.After many social media users reacted to the promotion by saying it might get employees into trouble, Purdy clarified that there is no ‘malice intended in it’. Despite having to backtrack a bit, the burger joint’s idea has been called everything from “genius”, to “lateral thinking at its best”.
One person did however point out the obvious, saying that it would begin to look weird if they claimed for a ‘laptop stand’ every week.
“Fun idea, in theory. But I kind of suspect that if it showed I was buying a laptop stand every week, my employers would probably have questions.”
After their promotion went viral, Good Fortune wrote in a post: “It might be wrong. It might be crazy. But… it might just work. #Receats #ItMightNotTho.”
Harmless fun or not, if you give the average guy a chance to stick it to ‘the man’, they’ll do it.
