A dude from the Cape Flats is proof that rising to the challenge and making the right life choices will eventually help bear fruit.
32-year-old Jean-Marc Johannes from Athlone achieved an extraordinary feat by securing a place in the Guinness World Records for his gnarly skateboarding skills.
As skateboarding royalty, Jean-Marc is no stranger to making Guinness World Record history. As Cape Town ETC notes, his recent recognition comes hot on the heels of his remarkable achievements in 2022. At that time, he set two new world records for achieving the most skateboard 360 frontside spins in 30 seconds, totalling seven spins, and also set the record for the most consecutive skateboard ollies, achieving an impressive 323 consecutive ollies.

Western Cape Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais, said Jean-Marc is proof that you can rise above your circumstances, per IOL:
“I am so proud of Jean-Marc. He has brought honour to all of us in the Western Cape. He is living proof that healthy lifestyle choices bear fruit. Jean-Marc is a true hero to all of us.”
Making a name for himself in skateboarding has not been easy, as he has faced numerous challenges such as chronic asthma, financial constraints and the absence of skate parks in Athlone.
Jean-Marc wants to put the sport in the spotlight and make a point of identifying and nurturing the next generation of professional skateboarders from Cape Town. What a guy.
