Die Antwoord have been quiet since news broke of their alleged abuse by their adopted son Tokkie, but the band’s squeaky-voiced Yolandie Visser has emerged from the controversy-hiatus to post a cryptic message on Facebook: “Russel Brand. Ninja. Same Cult.”
The tiny half of the Zef group seems to be throwing Ninja into the same group as Brand, who is currently diving for cover as allegations of sexual assault are being hurled his way, as well as the UK police sniffing around his past exploits.
No other context is given for the reference to Watkin Tudor Jones (Ninja) and Russell Brand’s names appearing together.
Ninja and Visser, who changed her Facebook moniker to Fafo Snuffling (a reference to her previous persona, Anica the Snuffling), have been doing some laying low as well since the Tokkie scandal broke.
After keeping a low profile in 2023, Die Antwoord returned to Instagram in April to tease their comeback. “Guess who’s back b**hes”, the group captioned a controversial picture of Ninja.
The Facebook post however might allude to 2019 claims by Australian female rapper Zheani Sparkes, who went public with elaborate allegations that Ninja had drugged, sexually assaulted, and human trafficked her into South Africa.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Zheani claims that Ninja also had “aggressive” sex with her against her will.
Much like Marilyn Manson, who spent three decades trying to convince the world that he was the anti-christ only for people to be all shooketh when he actually turned out to be a bad guy, Die Antwoord began their careers by flaunting their zeff-ness, so we can hardly be surprised that they turned out to be as common as they claimed.
As for Fafo Snuffling, perhaps she forgot to include her own name in the post. You can’t run around calling everyone a p**s and then start pointing fingers when the heat gets turned up. But just like their music, Yolandie’s post could mean anything or nothing, so let’s not jump to a conclusion too soon.
For now, Die Antwoord seems to be quiet, and although the group did hint at a new album they should perhaps just focus on dealing with their respective controversies for now.
We really don’t need another Die Antwoord album anyway.
