Is artificial intelligence really our enemy or is our fear of it the real problem?
That is the question at the centre of the latest movie by the acclaimed Rogue One: A Star Wars Story director Gareth Edwards. The Creator attempts to address this dilemma of the very real and present threat of AI through a heightened sci-fi lens.
In Edwards’ world of cyberpunk cityscapes and rolling fields tilled by robots, humanity trades blows with AI in an ever-escalating war for survival – and because of the current rise in AI, this on-screen battle couldn’t feel any more relevant and pertinent.
The Guardian, which awarded the film four out of five stars in its review, wrote that “Edwards draws together the many strands of our current AI debate with tremendous boldness, conjuring up an intriguing and stimulating spectacle”:
The Creator is an old-fashioned sci-fi actioner with some ideas to match to state-of-the-art digital effects, in the tradition of Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner or Neill Blomkamp’s District 9, with a creeping colonialist’s fear of the unknown to match that in Coppola’s Apocalypse Now. And given that Edwards has served some time on the Star Wars mother ship, it shouldn’t be too surprising to find some holograms in the mix and a certain dustbin-sized droid which whimpers something poignant about what an honour it’s been to serve his comrades before lumbering out to face the enemy on a kamikaze mission.
Here’s a quick look at the trailer for The Creator, which is out in theatres already:
Mashable‘s review says that the “stunning visuals and soundscapes make The Creator an instantly immersive experience, one that makes a great (and original!) addition to the sci-fi canon”.
It’s an “intriguing, stimulating, exhilarating movie”, which does a grand job of addressing the great issue of our age, AI.
