Are you one of those people who have forsaken other people for plants? Gather around, plant-frond, you are safe here.
Even if you’re not on the extreme end of vivacious plant collecting and flower-selfie-taking, plants are cool and we all want more of them in the spaces we most frequent, right? It has something to do with needing a break, getting back to nature, turning in the city hustle for something a little more cottage-core, fairy-core, wabi-sabi, namaste bae-like.
Without all that TikTok jargon, what I mean is that we all crave more nature in our homes so that we can get back to our roots.
Lucky for all the flower fans and plant parents of Cape Town, there are three exciting plant-related events coming up this month that are bound to inspire a forest in your foyer or a thoroughly botanical bathroom.
There’s the intriguing Exotic and Rare Plant Market, the amazing annual Cape Orchid Society 2023 Spring Show, and the fabulous Kirstenbosch Plant Fair to fill your calendar this month.
Let’s g(r)0(w)!
Hosted by Mother Dirt Humbly Living – a prominent soil, plants and plant decor shop – the Exotic and Rare Plant Market (September 10) is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of plants from faraway lands, aiming to make exotic and rare plants accessible. The event will hold space for plant lovers to connect, learn and share their passion for all things green.

Carla and David Hofmeyr, the passionate people behind Mother Dirt Humbly Living, started out by creating their own soil mixes, which eventually evolved into propagating exotic and rare plants.
Visitors will be able to browse a diverse range of plants native to tropical regions and explore hand-mixed specialised plant-growing mediums – perhaps you can even add a touch of rarity to your own collections.

Next up, there’s the Botanical Society’s upcoming Kirstenbosch Plant Fair on 7-8 October where you can go to know, grow, protect and enjoy our fabulous indigenous flora:
This year’s theme, “Build Back Biodiversity”, is a strong call to action for everyone to enhance the biodiversity within their gardens and homes:
How wonderful that by simply planting a few new species in your garden you have an opportunity to build back biodiversity and nurture wildlife in your very own space! And what better way to do this than by supporting the Kirstenbosch Branch’s Plant Fair fundraiser on 7 and 8 October.
This year the Plant Fair will be held in the Old Mutual Hall at Kirstenbosch, Gate 1.
Last but not least, the Cape Orchid Society Spring Show will be running on 28 and 29 October at the Richard Crowie Hall in Kirstenbosch. The event is hosted annually by the Cape Orchid Society as a platform to showcase our exotic flowers in larger-than-life-themed displays.

If you’re keen on adding new orchids to your plant collection or are looking to learn more, a range of expert vendors will be present to tempt and educate you, as you see fit.
There are even free orchid potting and care demonstrations that take place daily at 1PM where you can learn how to care for your plants at home.

This event will take place on Saturday, 28 October from 9AM – 5PM & Sunday, 29 October from 9AM to 4PM at Richard Crowie Hall in Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. It will only cost you R20 per person for adults and R10pp for kids. Note that this EXCLUDES the general entry fee required for Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens
