You’ve got to love our South African food retailers’ sense of humour.

Whether it’s the joke that is R52 for two litres of milk, or trying to pull the wool over our eyes by offering less for more or less the same. Or more. Either way, Checkers had a go at Woolies for proudly advertising that their cakes are now on sale in single slices at a ‘more affordable’ price.

Ever since Checkers changed the shopfitting in their stores to resemble the more ‘stylish look’ of Woolies, they have been having a go at the snobby retailer. So, when Woolworths advertised that their cakes are now being sold in single slices at the affordable price of R40 per slice, Checkers just couldn’t help themselves but point out that the math doesn’t add up to much of a saving.

At the time, Woolies declared “You spoke, we listened” as it rolled out the single sliced cake. But when it came to the price tag, many were taken aback by the R40 a slice. Checkers seized the opportunity, and pointed out the obvious: “R110 ÷ 8 decent slices = Way less than R39,99 per slice… the maths is ALWAYS mathing at Checkers.”

The post immediately went viral with more than 5 000 likes and 400 comments.

Online users mostly sang Checkers’ praise for coming through when the budget is tight, but there were others who noted there is no comparison between the two brands.

“I love you Checkers ne and I would forever do some of my grocery there but do not disrespect Woolies cake.”

“But your cake is not caking🤪 lets talk about the price of pringles instead.”

It does feel a little opportunistic of Checkers to point out the pricing, but whenever a retailer gets poked, it’s a good thing.

Maybe the two giants should have a scooter race to settle their differences – Sixty60 vs. Dash at Killarney. The loser has to sell bread at cost for a month.
