Our beloved SABC has allowed cricket fans a glimmer of hope as it appears to be in ‘negotiations’ with Multichoice over broadcasting rights for the Cricket World Cup.
Now this is the SABC, so take it with a pinch of salt, but after securing the rights of some Rugby World Cup games, this may just be something to get excited over.
“The SABC can confirm that negotiations between SABC and MultiChoice are ongoing regarding broadcasting rights for the Cricket World Cup,” says acting group executive for corporate affairs and marketing, Mmoni Seapolelo.
There is no word yet on how many or which matches will be bought from Multichoice, the official owner of the rights.
Broadcasting rights to matches featuring national teams is a hot topic currently as some South Africans are rightly annoyed at not being able to watch the Bokke unless you have DSTV (which became obsolete when they canned Egoli), but the national broadcaster says it will keep customers updated as soon as a deal has been reached.
Fingers crossed. Come on Multichoice, don’t skimp on our national sports.
