In a recent video made for Vogue, pop sensation Ariana Grande has candidly told fans about her personal journey of using cosmetic surgeries to “hide”, as well as her decision to take a hiatus from lip fillers and Botox injections in recent years.
Sharing touchingly personal stories of growth while presenting a make-up tutorial, Grande’s honesty and openness has clearly resonated with many viewers, as the video racked up 2.4 million views in just two days.
Having grown up in the unforgiving spotlight, Grande has faced public scrutiny over her appearance from a very young age. In the video, she expressed how challenging it can be to navigate what’s “worth hearing” amidst the constant chatter about her looks.
As she artfully applied makeup, the 30-year-old artist revealed that she used to amplify her beauty with bigger hair and thicker eyeliner as a form of disguise or protection.
However, as she matures and grows, Grande explained her perspective on beauty has transformed. She now views it as an avenue for self-expression and accentuating her natural features, rather than a mask used to placate the world around her.
Sharing her past use of cosmetic procedures, including lip fillers and Botox, Grande disclosed that she decided to halt these treatments in 2018 because she began to feel like it was becoming too much.
“For a long time, beauty was about hiding for me and now I feel like maybe it’s not.”
She expressed her desire to embrace her “well-earned cry lines and smile lines” and said, “I hope my smile lines get deeper and deeper and I laugh more and more. Aging can be such a beautiful thing.”
While it’s common knowledge that many celebrities undergo cosmetic enhancements, it’s rare for them to openly discuss these alterations, even when they involve less invasive procedures like Botox and fillers. It takes a decent dose of bravery and grace to address these taboo topics. Grande’s honesty is part of a growing trend of celebrities being more forthright about their experiences and the added pressures involved when the world is constantly telling you how to look.
Some notable figures, such as Chrissy Teigen and Cindy Crawford, have openly acknowledged their use of cosmetic enhancements and in 2022, Blac Chyna even documented her process of dissolving facial fillers on social media.
That being said, these kinds of beauty procedures are still gaining traction. According to a survey from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, there has been a noticeable increase in patients aged 34 and younger receiving Botox injections. 75% of facial plastic surgeons have also recently reported a rise in patients under 30 seeking cosmetic procedures or injectables.
While it’s every persons own choice to tailor their looks to their choosing, celebs like Grande believe that these topics should be openly discussed, especially when sharing so-called ‘beauty secrets’.
Grande told fans she hasn’t ruled out the possibility of future injectables or surgeries, but emphasised that we shouldn’t be afraid of acknowledging the experiences surrounding these procedures. As she eloquently puts it:
“F*** it, let’s put it all out there.”
