Siri, play ‘Red Wine’ by UB40!

We’ve heard of Jesus turning water into wine, but it’s a first seeing an entire dorpie almost submerged in the stuff. Unfortunately, this case was not a ‘miracle’ but an unintentional flooding situation. And as a second-generation Portuguese immigrant, I am inclined to say that it doesn’t get more Porra than this.

This week the tranquil town of Levira in Portugal found itself awash in a sea of red wine after two massive tanks at the local distillery experienced an unexpected breach.

Residents watched in disbelief as approximately 2.2 million litres of red wine surged forth, transforming the town into a surreal, literal ‘red sea’. That’s a lot of jungle juice.

Glug glug glug.

Levira Distillery, the source of the delightfully-alcoholic deluge, promptly issued an apology after learning that the basement of a nearby house had succumbed to the unexpected wine invasion. The distillery assumed full responsibility for the mishap and any ensuing damage it may have caused.

That’s a phone-call I’ve never had to make; ‘Hello, yes? I came down to the basement and now I’m knee-deep in well-rounded cabernet.’

Remarkably, amid the red tide, local volunteers rose to the occasion, preventing the wine from advancing further and potentially reaching the nearby river. The hero citizens’ swift and determined efforts averted what could have become an environmental calamity.

To that we say saúde! (‘Cheers’ or ‘to your health’ for the Englishman).
