Of all the terrible violence we see in the media these days, there are some cases that really make you wonder “Why?”

Why do people lose their minds and resort to violence with almost no provocation? Are we a nation of psychotics just itching for someone to give us a reason to vent our anger?

Two incidents that happened in the last week really had us wondering whether we need to have a serious conversation about rage, and the utter disregard we sometimes have for fellow humans. Of course there are more hectic crimes happening every day, but the sheer ‘f*** you’ attitude in these stories is terrible.

A Durbanville mother who was about to pick up her children from school had a terrifying incident when a guy opened fire on her in a presumed road rage incident.

According to the shaken woman, who posted about the incident on social media, the incident occurred in Wellington Road on her way to town to pick up her kids at school.

She was driving in the right-hand lane, as she planned to turn right at the intersection with Paul Kruger Street, when a white Mercedes-Benz – a man in his 30s or 40s – almost crashed into her from the rear when she stopped to turn right into Paul Kruger Street.

“He had been driving at a very high speed and had gone straight from the turning-only lane. I flashed my lights to the driver to alert him and turned right into Paul Kruger Street. It was only after the first four-way stop, when I was approaching the T-junction in Protea Way, that I realised the driver in the Mercedes-Benz was now chasing after me.”

After making the turn, the lady spotted the driver come to a stop across the T-junction, open his window and then start firing at her vehicle.

“He fired twice – hitting my vehicle in the backlights and on the window spoiler. I have never been more terrified in my life. All I was thinking was, that thank God my children were not with me,” she says.

According to Col Theo Fisher, spokesperson of the Durbanville police, a case of malicious damage to property is being investigated at this stage. Fisher says it is suspected that the “firearm” that was used in the incident, was not a real firearm, but a gas pistol.

Another case of pointless violence surfaced this week that shows a random guy punching another bloke as if it were nothing. The incident was captured on CCTV in Klerksdorp.

What occurred before the incident is unsure, but the person who was punched is now in hospital with serious brain injuries, leading to police looking for the perpetrator on a charge of attempted murder.

Despite the horrific sight of the guy just punching the stranger, it’s even more disturbing to see him trying to help out after the severity of the poor guy’s injury became evident, obviously regretting what he did a few seconds ago.

Why are people so quick to resort to violence? The barefoot brawler just had to slug the guy, and now someone is in the hospital fighting for their life, and the big okes life is f***ed.

As for the ‘gas gun’ guy – was terrifying a mother worth the sh*tstorm your year is about to become?
