To pineapple and pickle, or not to pineapple and pickle, that is the question!
Well, according to US frozen meal brand DiGiorno, the answer becomes another question: why not both?
We’ve all become accustomed to the passionate advocacy for pineapple on pizza (with equal part backlash against the topping) but another, equally polarising topping has stealthily crept onto the scene in recent years – the humble pickle.
I may be on the side of pineapple peeps, but for some reason I just can’t wrap my head around a pickle sitting on my ‘za.
In a smart business move that saw the company utilise the age-old conversation of whether pineapple and pickles should go on pizza to push sales from curious customers, US brand DiGiorno recently introduced the “Pineapple Pickle Pizza,” a culinary experiment that promised to be the most controversial pizza on the market.
Bizarrely enough, the company chose to create the pizza as a ‘half ‘n’ half’ type situation, where the two controversial ingredients are not mixed together but rather each adorn their own semicircle of the ‘za.
While some might question the appeal of such a combination, it seems that many pizza enthusiasts were intrigued, whether that be for curiosity’s sake or due to ‘advanced’ tastebuds. The “Pineapple Pickle Pizza” was met with such overwhelming demand and promptly sold out on the same day it was launched. Clearly, there is no shortage of adventurous eaters willing to explore new horizons in pizza.
Kimberly Holowiak, Senior Brand Manager for DiGiorno, spoke to the polarising nature of the companies fasted-selling pizza, and explained how the argument is the selling point.
“We know consumers love to debate pizza toppings, especially pineapple and pickles. We hope our Pineapple Pickle Pizza brings people together through friendly debate, no matter which side they choose.”
While I’m still sceptical when it comes to pickles entering the chat, I’m glad our local Butler’s will always provide when it comes to my favourite pineapple pizza topping combo.
I’m adamant that Butler’s’ “Thai Chicken”, featuring Thai-style chicken pieces, garlic, pineapple and Butleritos for a bit of extra tang, is the only pizza you’ll find me purchasing to live out my full pineapple fantasy.
Even if you’re staunchly anti-pineapple, Butler’s‘ variety is enough to quell any pizza argument – there’s something for everyone.
If you don’t believe me, ask all the South Africans who voted Butlers as Cape Town’s No. 1 takeaway joint for the third year in a row. If that’s not proof of prowess, I don’t know what is.
Sorry not sorry pickles, it’s a no from me.
