Rwanda’s annual gorilla-naming ceremony, known as Kwita Izina, drew a star-studded crowd this year.
The ceremony which took place on Friday saw notable personalities like actor Idris Elba, comedian Kevin Hart, and musician Asa coming together to honour the beautiful gorillas who call Rwanda their home.
Elba and his wife, Sabrina Dhowre Elba, took to social media to gush about their Rwandan journey. The couple, dressed in matching robes, ventured to a scenic resort before attending the much-anticipated gorilla-naming ceremony.
Their visit also included a high-profile meet-up with the country’s President, Paul Kagame, where the couple engaged in a meaningful conversation discussing the pivotal role that creative arts can play in shaping Africa’s future.
Kwita Izina, which commenced in 2005, is a cherished Rwandan tradition modelled on the age-old practice of naming children in the presence of family and friends. The touching event serves to commemorate Rwanda’s unwavering commitment to the preservation of endangered gorillas.

Kevin Hart and his family also attended the ceremony after embarking on a captivating safari adventure through the Rwandan wilderness. Hart described the journey as, “one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in my life”.
The sassy American comedian chose the name Gakondo for his gorilla, meaning “traditional”, while Elba and his wife went with Narame, which means “long life”.
Adding to the star-studded affair was the presence of Nigerian-French singer-songwriter Bukola Elemide, known by her stage name Asa. The ceremony also attracted a diverse array of international politicians and business leaders, all paying their respects to Rwanda’s dedication to gorilla conservation.
While some traditions fade with time, Kwita Izina is one that we hope only strengthens along with the population of Rwanda’s gorillas.
