The desire for that big ‘WOW” reveal moment has time and time again trumped the need for safety, whether it’s adding chemical dyes to waterfalls or being arrested for sparking a 22 000-acre wildfire.

If you truly have a burning desire to announce your child’s genitals to the world, can we just stick to a cake next time?

Apparently a cake doesn’t quite cut it, as the latest tragedy linked to the bizarre trend has shown.

A gender reveal party in Sinaloa, Mexico, took a horrific turn this week when a small plane, hired by an expectant couple to fly overhead, nosedived the pilot to an untimely demise.

To make the reveal more exciting, the couple had arranged for the small aeroplane to fly past and release either pink or blue powder into the sky, signifying the gender of their baby.

As the small aircraft approached the eager mom-and-dad-to-be, who were positioned alongside an ‘Oh baby’ sign, it released a vibrant plume of pink smoke from its fuselage, prompting shrieks of delight and cheers of joy from the gathered guests.

Then amidst the peals of delight from the crowd of friends and family, the Piper PA-25-235 Pawnee aircraft abruptly shot upwards, tilting on its side, and suffered the catastrophic collapse of one of its wings mid-air.

Everyone was so focussed on the happy couple that the plane’s destruction took a hot minute to register. Even the cameraman who saw the plane break up turned back towards the embracing couple. WTF.
