You’ve gotta love Nando’s and their cheeky PR vibes – the chicken chain is at it again, this time with a sweet yet giggle-worthy post paying tribute to the king of Carte Blanche, Derek Watts.
The 74-year-old TV legend passed away on Tuesday after a tough battle with cancer and condolences have been streaming in across social media platforms, uniting the country as we mourn a great man.
You’ve got to hand it to Nando’s, whose condolence post stood out for its quick wit amongst the countless ‘RIP’s.

Known for their hilarious ads that poke fun at life and politics in South Africa, Nando’s has hit the nail on the head with this one.
Watts leaves behind a legacy of brilliantly ‘grilling’ journalism, and the online response to the tribute from one of SA’s favourite chicken eateries has proven that Saffas are here for the cheeky eulogy.
That being said, one or two social media users found the response “disrespectful”. Surprising, as one can not only expect this kind of on-the-nose humour from Nando’s, but the post retained it’s classiness by giving props to Watts for his TV interviewing prowess. That’s how we see it, anyway.
Devi Sankaree Govender, who worked with Watts on Carte Blanche, also shared some emotional words after his passing:
“We had a few laughs at the crazy situations we often found ourselves. We really got on well since day one it’s not easy when you say goodbye to a colleague after 18 years, but he has left an indelible legacy.”
We couldn’t agree more.
He really was, and forever will be, SA’s ‘grillmaster’.
