Zack Snyder has just gifted us with the first trailer for his new ‘space opera’ called Rebel Moon, and even though it’s only scheduled for release in December, the movie looks to be one of the biggest sci-fi flicks released this year.

Snyder is of course the genius who brought us 300, Watchmen, Army of The Dead, as well as the 2004 remake of Dawn Of The Dead – a personal favourite. His newest foray into violence and slow-mo action sequences will be split into two instalments, with the first coming end of the year.

Rebel Moon transports us to a galaxy ruled over by the tyrannical ‘Mother World’. This evil empire is obviously out to conquer everyone and everything — even the peaceful moon colony of Veldt, all the way out at the edge of the galaxy.

Enter our hero (or heroine), Kora (Sofia Boutella), a woman with a mysterious off-Veldt past, who recruits a ragtag team of warriors from different worlds to fight the threat.

Since critiquing films is part of the entertainment world, and made people like Leon van Nierop famous, I am going to toss my two cents into the tepid opinion pool and ask why every ‘blockbuster’ these days seems exactly the same?

You have a standard evil overlord against a ‘diverse group of underdogs’ led by ‘the special one’ who is at first reluctant to embrace their ‘specialness’. He/She then finds the glowing sword, special wand, or motivational letter from a dead parent which helps them take the fight to the bad guy, who is always dressed like Pharrell Williams or a Nazi.

During the course of several insane CGI battles the unlikely heroes find friendship and respect for each other’s differences, before saving the planet and driving the bad guys out. Star Wars, Avengers, and the Bible have been rocking this plotline for literal centuries, yet it seems we can’t come up with any other story.

Despite this, it will likely have some brilliant CGI scenes to make up for Hollywood’s lack of creative ideas.

Judging by the teaser, it will at least be epic. The first trailer explodes with action-packed sequences, from a sword fight with a spider woman to an encounter with a majestic winged beast.

Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire is scheduled to be released on December 22, 2023, by Netflix, with a limited theatrical release in cinemas. The follow-up, Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver, is set for release on April 19, 2024, by which time you would likely have forgotten about the first movie already.
