Adorable footage has started making the rounds on social media of a rare baby giraffe who can hold claim to being the only one of its kind to be born completely devoid of spots.
Tennessee-based Bright’s Zoo welcomed the giraffe calf in July, and have now shared footage of the unique creature in celebration.
The proud zoo shared how special this new addition to its animal family is in a recent press statement:
“Giraffe experts believe she is the only solid-colored reticulated giraffe living anywhere on the planet.”
The footage really captures the strange beauty of this little leggy gal, who looks like she’s had her spots photoshopped away.
The zoo has now turned to the public to help name the calf, and we’re assuming that ‘Spot’ is out of the question when it comes to name options.
Already six feet tall and steadily growing in size, maybe an appropriate basketball reference name could work.
Name jokes aside, Bright’s Zoo has provided some truly lovely name options for voters to choose from for the new baba. All the options are of Swahili origin, a nod to the giraffe species’ OG homeland. Locals can now vote on Kipekee, Friyali or Jamella to find the winning moniker for the calf.
Zoo founder Tony Bright also used the historical moment as a way to spread much-needed awareness surrounding the protection and appreciation of these majestic creatures:
“The international coverage of our patternless baby giraffe has created a much-needed spotlight on giraffe conservation … Wild populations are silently slipping into extinction, with 40 percent of the wild giraffe population lost in just the last 3 decades.”
Those are some scary numbers. In celebration of this miracle birth, there’s no time like now to spread more awareness surrounding the plight of these gentle giants, spots or no spots.
