A Taiwanese Couple who thought it a joke to pose in clothing people left behind at their family-run laundromat have become unlikely fashion influencers after their son began posting the photos online.
Chang Wan-ji, 83, and his wife Hsu Sho-er, 84, run a laundry service in central Taiwan, and its not uncommon for people to forget their clothes there and never pick them up. Their son, Reef Chang, however, convinced the old ballies to do a funny ‘fashion shoot’ wearing the forgotten items, never realising what an effect the ‘trendsetters’ were going to have on local fashion.
Chang and Hsu have never had a social media account, but now their Instagram @wantshowasyoung has more than 600,000 followers.
The couple are loving their new-found fame, and say that it feels like they now have thousands of ‘grandchildren’ as teens all over Taiwan look to them for fashion advice.
At a time when most couples would be rocking on the stoep, Reef Chang believes his parents can be an inspiration to other older people:
“Through these posts now, my grandparents also want to tell elderly people not to limit themselves and live every moment to the fullest.”
Asian ‘streetwear’ has for a long time set trends for future fashion. Many of the bigger designers in the world use looks that originate on the streets of Tokyo and Beijing as indicators for which trends will be big in coming seasons. Hopefully the big names will look toward Chang and Hsu as well for some ideas.
