When Gangnam Style dropped in 2012, the whole planet woop whooped along with Psy as the hit sent musical shockwaves across continents and cultures.
It was one of those viral songs that almost everyone liked, something that was universally welcomed post-Makarena.
Gangnam Style debuted at number one in South Korea and received mixed to positive reviews, although with much praise for its catchy beat and Psy’s amusing dancing in various locations around the world in its music video.
The song and its music video then went viral in August 2012 and immediately influenced popular culture worldwide. To many, it was the theme song to South Korea’s explosion onto the cultural scene, and without a doubt must have pissed off North Korea quite a bit as it displayed a fun, colourful attitude that is everything the Supreme Leader tries to hide from his ‘subjects’.
The term “Gangnam Style” is a neologism that refers to the nouveau riche lifestyles associated with the Gangnam region of Seoul, and the original video has racked up over 4.8 billion views on Youtube, making it more popular than the Paris Hilton sex tape ever was.
It was truly embraced by every corner of the world, and its dance was even attempted by political leaders such as British Prime Minister David Cameron and United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who hailed it as “a force for world peace”.At a bilateral meeting with South Korea’s President Park Geun-hye in 2013, US President Barack Obama even cited the success of Gangnam Style as an example of how people around the world are being “swept up” by the Korean Wave of culture.
It’s then not really surprising to find that despite the hit being so old, Psy is still filling up massive stadiums as he rides the wave of his viral success. A recent TikTok shows exactly how big Park Jae-sang, or Psy to the world, still is, and if you haven’t donkey-walked across the office recently, check it out and bust a move.

Since we’re all about the beats today, why not turn up your sound a bit and check out the original video below. If you’re in an office, we reckon someone is going to pop their head in before the song ends. And they’ll have a smile on their face. Guaranteed.
